Katie McShane’s research interests lie at the intersection of ethical theory, particularly the theory of value, and environmental ethics. Her work explores the moral significance of the emotional attitudes that we take toward the natural world. She has published papers in journals such as Philosophical Studies, Midwest Studies in Philosophy, Environmental Ethics, Ethics & the Environment, Philosophy Compass, Environmental Values, and Philosophy, Place, and Environment. Her current research analyzes the assumptions about value that might be present in various valuing attitudes (in particular, awe and respect) that environmentalists often urge people to take toward the natural world. Prior to working at Colorado State, she was an Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University and a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University’s Center for Ethics and the Professions. She holds a B.A. from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
